Philip Franklin (President)
Phil Franklin has lived in PNG on a continuous basis for over 37 years and as such his knowledge of PNG is substantial.
He has been involved across a broad industry base including forestry, agribusiness, food manufacturing, road transport, rural agricultural enterprises, resource industry support and property project development.
During this time he has developed an extensive network of contacts spanning a wide cross section of private sector operators, government statutory bodies, local, provincial and national governments, NGO Donor agencies and peak bodies. He has worked or travelled recreationally through most provinces and in particular has an exceptional understanding and knowledge of the Morobe Province.
He is currently Group CEO for the BNG Trading Company a rapid growing predominantly food based FMCG.
He has been elected to senior positions on a number of peak bodies including the Presidency of APNGBC(PNG), Secretary PNG Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Through these positions he represents the private sector on government boards and statutory authorities including Deputy Chairmanship of the Investment Promotion Authority. He is currently Chairperson for the Host Organising Committee (HOC) for the PNG Games to be held during November 2014 in Lae.
In 2009 he was awarded an MBE by the PNG Government for services to Business and Rural Agricultural Development.
Mark Baker (Committee Member)
Mark is a highly experienced international banker having previously held senior roles with HSBC in Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, India and Bahrain.
Prior to taking up his current role with ANZ PNG in August 2012, Mark had overall responsibility for ANZ’s Corporate Banking activities in Queensland, covering private and public companies, with a particular focus on services to the Natural Resources sector.
Mark brings with him a deep experience across a wide range of banking activities including Corporate and Institutional Banking, Commercial and SME, and Retail Banking, as well as key product lines including International Trade Services, Payments and Cash Management and Operations.
David Knapton (Committee Member)
On 1 May, 2014 David Knapton commenced his posting as the Senior Trade Commissioner for Austrade in Port Moresby.
David has more than 39 years’ experience in the Trade portfolio. He joined the Department of Overseas Trade in Brisbane in 1975 and was appointed to Austrade when it was formed in 1986. Most of David’s career has been spent in client and customer facing roles in support of Australia’s Trade and Investment development imperative.
He has been posted as Trade Commissioner with Austrade in Papua New Guinea (1988 – 1990), the Republic of Korea (1992 – 1995) and Malaysia (1996 – 1999). His first long term posting followed a 4 month assignment in Port Moresby in 1987.
In addition to the time spent with the Department of Trade and Austrade in Brisbane and abroad, David’s career has included stints with Austrade in Canberra, Sydney, Newcastle, Darwin and Adelaide.
David is married with 3 daughters. His oldest girls (25 year old twins) have “flown the coop”, while his youngest daughter is in her third year of studies at the University of South Australia.
David holds a Bachelor of Economics degree (with a major in International Economics) from the University of Queensland.
